12 Best Reusable Sandwich Bags 2021 | The Sun UK

THE best reusable sandwich bags should be easy to use, easy to clean and save you money in the long run.

We’ve rounded up some of the most popular options around.

Are reusable sandwich bags safe?

Reusable sandwich bags are made from food-grade materials that are completely safe to use for food storage. That said, you should be careful about how you use them.

Depending on the type of material it’s made from, you might not be able to use it in the microwave or clean it in the dishwasher, for example.

Some materials, like beeswax-coated film, aren’t suitable for raw meat. They will eventually wear out after use, so it’s important to look for any wear and tear.

It’s also important to clean your bags after every use to prevent cross contamination that could introduce bacteria to your food.

We’ve rounded up some of the most popular sandwich bags below.

We tested: Tala zero waste sandwich and snack wax bags

    • Tala zero waste sandwich and snack wax bags, pack of 2, £19.99 from Ocado - buy here

These waxed snack and sandwich bags from Tala are ideal for kids’ lunch boxes.

You get two different sizes in a pack, and they are both big enough for a simple sandwich — think two slices of bread with a light filling rather than a baguette.

Once your sandwich is in, you simply flap the top over and mould the bag in your hands to fit around the sandwich. The wax covering the cotton fabric will soften with the heat of your hand and hold its shape when cool, so you get a snug case that will hold your bread in place, just like cling film.

We found this super easy to do, although you might get a bit of wax residue on your hands.

One thing to bear in mind is that while it’s water resistant, it’s not waterproof. This means the bags will happily hold in any mayonnaise that’s escaped from the sandwich but it won’t be able to hold in any liquids.

How to wash reusable sandwich bags

Most reusable sandwich bags are dishwasher safe but if it’s not or you just prefer to wash it by hand, that’s easy to do as well.

Whatever you do though, don’t turn it inside out to wash as this could break the seal on the bags and stop them from being watertight.

You should be cleaning the bags after every use with warm soapy water and a soft sponge, removing any stuck on food as well as grease.

Then you can simply let it air dry over a drying rack with the opening propped open.

Once in a while you’ll need to do a deeper clean, mainly to remove the stains.

Start with a well rinse reusable sandwich bag; make sure there’s no food debris inside and all the grease has already been removed.

In a bowl, make a cleaning paste using one part distilled white vinegar, one part lemon juice and two parts baking soda.

As soon as you mix the two liquids with the baking soda, it should start bubbling away.

Smear this mixture inside the bag, making sure you work it into the corners, and let it get to work. It will take about 15 to 30 minutes.

Afterwards, just rinse it clean and allow it to dry as normal.
