Bristol sports coach 'abused schoolboys after luring them into a shed using footballs signed by Engl

A SPORTS coach sexually abused junior schoolboys and gave one of them footballs signed by England players, a court heard.

Brian Kelly, 68, molested his two young victims in a shed used to store sports equipment when they were alone, it is claimed.

A jury was told the mother of one boy became suspicious when Kelly gave him birthday and Christmas presents including footballs signed by international stars.

Kelly also gave the lad a birthday card referring to his eyes, Bristol Crown Court heard.

The offences are said to have happened when Kelly was a caretaker at Christ Church Junior School in Downend, Bristol, where he was also a volunteer sports coach.

Christopher Smyth, prosecuting, said boy A, who cannot be named, was supervised alone by Kelly on a number of occasions.

He told the court: "Boy A said the defendant was touching him in the downstairs area all the time. This happened when they were in the shed alone together.

"He would try to avoid it but the defendant would stand in his way, saying he would get the head to ring his mother."

The boy made a formal complaint to police years later and Kelly was suspended.

When interviewed by police Kelly denied ever having been alone with the boy and said the allegations were untrue.

Yet he was charged with three offences against the boy before the second alleged victim came forward.

Smyth said the second boy's mother read a local newspaper report about Kelly being charged and asked her son about his relationship with the caretaker.

The second boy reportedly broke down in tears.

Mr Smyth said: "She was shocked when he (her son) started crying and said he had been touched."

Boy B also claimed that rubbed his groin area over his trousers.

"The boy felt disgusted and knew it was not right," Mr Smyth said.

"The defendant told him to not tell anyone or he would lose his job."

Kelly of Bristol, Somerset denies three counts of sexual assault on a child aged under 13 with respect to boy A and a further two of the same charge on boy B.

The trial continues.
