What are the lyrics to Jerusalem and is it Englands national anthem? The Sun

OFTEN regarded as the nation's favourite hymn, England’s anthem for the Commonwealth Games is Jerusalem.

But is it England's National Anthem and do you know the words? Here is everything you need to know about the anthem athletes will hear when collecting gold, at the Commonwealth Games.

Is it England's national anthem?

England doesn't actually have a national anthem at all - though the debate has raged in Parliament about what song should be sung before major international sporting events.

There are traditionally three options for the choice of England anthem - Jerusalem, God Save The Queen or Land of Hope and Glory.

God Save The Queen is used for Team GB wins at sporting events such as the Olympics - but when athletes split into the home nations for the Commonwealths, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have their own anthem.

England traditionally uses the UK anthem of God Save The Queen at football and rugby matches, but they won't when collecting gold at the Commonwealth Games.

Instead, patriotic hymn Jerusalem will be played, and seems to have won the hearts of the English, consistently emerging as the nation's favourite.

In 2010, the Commonwealth Games Council for England conducted a poll to decide the anthem - the three options were God Save The Queen, Jerusalem and Land Of Hope And Glory.

And it's no surprise that with 52 per cent - Jerusalem was voted as the chosen anthem.

Cricket matches also use the anthem while darts has opted for Land Of Hope And Glory.

The hymn is an adaptation of William Blake's poem And Did Those Feet In Ancient Time.

The music was written by Sir Hubert Parry in 1916.

What are the Jerusalem lyrics?

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among those dark satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold!
Bring me my arrows of desire!
Bring me my spear: o clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariots of fire!

I will not cease from mental fight;
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.
