Police lock down busy Edinburgh street after major crash as paramedics race to scene

A MAJOR city centre street was locked down by emergency services after a serious crash last night.

Police and paramedics were scrambled to Cowgate in Edinburgh after the two-vehicle smash between a car and a taxi on Thursday evening.

Rescue crews shut down the road as the emergency incident unfolded and police officers guarded the scene.

One man who was driving the car has been arrested over the crash.

Revellers were seen looking over the crash scene from a as nearby pubs poured out.

An onlooker said: “There were a lot of emergency services, the whole street was shut down, it went on for ages.”

Another eyewitness added: “It was wall-to-wall police cars earlier. Ambulances. The lot, The whole street was blue lights.

"Then motorcycles split the road and rushed somebody to hospital in an ambulance with blue lights. It was a serious incident.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called around 6.55pm to a report of a two-vehicle crash on Cowgate, Edinburgh.

“Emergency services are in attendance and the road is currently closed.
