A POLICE officer has died after his patrol car crashed and reportedly burst into flames while he was responding to an blue-light call today.
Emergency services declared a "major incident" as the horror 2pm smash closed the M6 in both directions near Carlisle, Cumbria.
Cumbria Constabulary said the 47-year-old officer worked for the force's mobile support group.
He was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision on the M6.

AN eight-year-old girl died and a boy aged five was rushed to hospital after being struck by a car while out walking.
They were among a group of summer scheme children making their way to Carrickfergus Castle in Co Antrim today when the accident happened.
The PSNI named the little girl as Scarlett Rosborough from the Larne area.
They said the boy’s injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

BILLIONAIRE former Manchester United owner John Magnier has paid to rescue Ukrainian refugees and put them up.
The Irish businessman and wife Susan launched a major operation to get staff and family to safety in Ireland.
Magnier, 74, who owns Coolmore Stud and all-conquering racing stable Ballymore, wanted to help those caught up in the devastation caused by the Russian invasion.
