UK's 'prettiest' Christmas market is a disaster - there's no TREE and it's full of ugly tents sna

A CHRISTMAS market has been blasted for having no TREE, ugly tents and snacks that will BANKRUPT you.

Oxford's Christmas market on Broad Street was almost cancelled after the inclusion of a cycle lane which saw its original organiser pull out.

The event usually has around 60 stalls selling their wares, as well as choirs and brass bands.

Oxford City Council then confirmed a new organiser called LSD Promotions had stepped in.

But many traders and visitors have been left unimpressed with the market this year.

It has lost its Christmas tree and switched from wooden chalets to gazebos.

TikTok videos have also revealed the market is often empty and some food items are "overpriced",  including £4 brownies.

Shae Grass and Tian Chaudhry, of homecooked dog food company Butternut Box, described the market as "disappointing".

"There's not that much variety, there's not that much music. I think the footfall is quite low," Tian told the BBC.

Trader Shae added: "Last year was a lot better when people weaved their way through the different chalets. It felt more Christmassy.

"This could be almost be a high street any time of the year."

Khia Spencer, of Iuvo Skincare, said the wooden huts were "sorely missed".

An Oxfordshire County Council spokesperson said: "The conditions regarding the cycle lane were in place when the Christmas Market application process started.

"Although an alternative route was provided last year during the Christmas Market, that option was not viable this year.

"The east-west cycle path through Broad Street is a key route and is important to maintain. Thousands of cyclists use it every day.

"We looked at things we could do to improve safety, such as reducing the width of the entrance to the cycle path to reduce bike speeds.

"Similar events have taken place in Broad Street with the cycle route in place, and these have not led to any reports of collisions.

"We are not aware of any reports of collisions at the site during this year's event.

"In a Broad Street consultation, nearly 71 per cent of people who responded were in favour allowing cycling through Broad Street at all times."
