SUZUKI has used its 4x4 expertise on the Swift supermini for the first time.
The Swift 4x4 is perfect for buyers who want more reassurance that they can easily tackle the winter months but in a small, unintimidating package.
The 4x4 uses a different suspension and dampers and the height is raised by 25mm.
It also gets an extra rear differential for better grip.
I only tested the Swift 4x4 on a dusty forest track but it worked well enough.
And although it is not quite as agile as the excellent two-wheel- drive version, it is barely noticeable unless you are really pushing it.
With the extra weight, you really need to work the willing 1.2litre engine, so expect to make only steady progress. But then, Suzuki drivers never seem in a hurry.
The only other penalty is that fuel consumption drops by about 5mpg which, although Suzuki claims it still returns 52mpg, is nearer to 45mpg in normal driving.
The 4x4 Swift can be picked out by the kick plates at the front and back and plastic mouldings around the wheel arches and body, together with the raised body height.
Prices range from £11,516 to £13,116 – £879 less than its only rival the Fiat Panda 4x4, which makes this 4x4 very competitive . . . just like all Suzukis.
